If I would have had any idea that the author of the book clips her parrot’s wings, I would have kept looking. I was searching for a book that could help me with training my flighted parrot to be a good citizen in my home. This is not the book. Do not think that because the author has a flighted parrot chapter that it is going to help with your unique flighted parrot issues. The flighted parrot chapter was incomplete and written by someone who clips her parrot’s wings. How can the reader take the flighted parrot information seriously when she does not live with a flighted parrot? None of the instructions mention, “and then the parrot flies away” in her steps which is a significant issue with a flighted parrot. She does not teach us how to handle basic flighted parrot issues such as trying to hang out on the ceiling fan/kitchen cabinets, chew them, and not come down. She gives recall instruction which may help the ceiling fan/kitchen cabinet issue and other similar problems but what should be done in the meantime while they are learning and destroying the house? She probably does not know because she lives with a clipped parrot.The author seemed to be overly biased for clipped parrots, she even gives an example of a newly owned parrot that flew out the door, never to be seen by the owner again. She failed to mention what the owner was doing to prevent escape. There are ways to prevent your parrot from flying out the door. I did not find positive and memorable examples of flighted parrots in the book. Her examples of what can happen to flighted parrots are not helpful. Do not use the fact that a flighted parrot can fall in an open toilet and drown as an excuse to clip. A human toddler can and do drown the same way; we take precautions so that the toddler and bird stay out of the toilet and do not drown. I find it disturbing that a new owner of a flighted parrot may decide to clip after reading this book. It is the easy thing to do but the best things in life are not always easy. She calls it a personal decision to clip. Yes, a personal decision for the owner but what about the parrot? I am sure that the parrot does not want to become disabled because it is convenient for the owner.With all that said, I am giving the book three stars because I did find helpful information in the book. The last chapter and other areas were spent on “tricks”. I would have much preferred addressing real issues that need to be addressed for parrots living with humans instead of so many tricks. The cover mentions trick training and solving behavior problems. I would have preferred it if the author spent more time addressing behavior instead of tricks. For example, it would have been fantastic to read about different parrot calls and what they might mean instead of a bunch of tricks. When the owner leaves the room and the parrot calls out loudly, what does that mean and what is the best response? Should we answer back or ignore? What are the pros and cons of each? More practical examples and information would have made the book more useful.
