This is the first major biography for a generation of a truly formidable king. Edward I is familiar to millions as 'Longshanks', conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace ('Braveheart'). Edward was born to rule England, but believed that it was his right to rule all of Britain. His reign was one of the most dramatic of the entire Middle Ages, leading to war and conquest on an unprecedented scale, and leaving a legacy of division that has lasted from his day to our own.In his astonishingly action-packed life, Edward defeated and killed the famous Simon de Montfort in battle; travelled across Europe to the Holy Land on crusade; conquered Wales, extinguishing forever its native rulers, and constructed - at Conwy, Harlech, Beaumaris and Caernarfon - the most magnificent chain of castles ever created. After the death of his first wife he erected the Eleanor Crosses - the grandest funeral monuments ever fashioned for an English monarch.

This well-written history of the life and times of Edward I probably has all anyone not aprofessional historian needs to know. The book has everything: maps, pictures, family trees, extensive notes, bibliography and a thorough index. It’s a complete reference. However, I have one quarrel with the author: he uses the term “anti-Semite” where it really doesn’t apply.“To say this much is not to deny that Edward was a thorough-going anti-Semite: he was, as his pogromof 1279 proves all too clearly. It is merely to emphasize that, in his anti-Semitism, Edward was altogether conventional.A bigoted man, he lived in a bigoted age, and was king of a bigoted people.” (371)This is nonsense. The Jews in England at the time of Edward made their money through usury. Usury was prohibited by the Church.Edward in his statue of Jewry of 1275 asked them to stop doing that and get real jobs: merchants, artisans, farmers. They persisted with usury. Also, they were involved in coin clipping. So, he kicked them out in 1290.That’s it.Edward as king was protector of the realm and he acted accordingly.Morris even goes to greater absurdity to excuse Jewish behavior at the time of Edward:“. . . the king’s recent prohibition of moneylending [usury] must have driven many of them [the Jews] to desperatemeasures [coin clipping] in order to survive.” (170)Hmm. So the king drove the Jews to engage in coin clipping.Poor Jews: they couldn’t make money by charging usurious interest to desperate peasants, so they had to shavethe edges off coins in order to make a living.(See EDWARD I, Michael Prestwich, Yale, 1997, for a more balanced, objective account of this episode with the Jews during the time of Edward I.)PS The word “anti-Semite” did not enter the English language until 1882, and the word“pogrom” was not used until 1903.These words do no apply to Edward I’s expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290.
