The authors style, sarcasm, and constant attempts to be ever more "cute" with explanations and, later, interjections of nihilistic philosophical commentary**, grow more annoying and seemingly arrogant as the book degenerates onward. (Leaves one with impression this author would be an insufferable "know-it-all" as a dinner guest.)** Sampling of examples: "The interplay of elements and drugs can even illuminate how life itself emerges from the unconscious chemical slag of the periodic table." / "...the rich mental life of human beings, the source of all their glory and much of their woe, is chemistry through and through." / " ...tie a supposedly universal unit of time to the transit of an unremarkable rock [Earth] around a forgettable star [Sun]... "/ p.325 & p.330 (paperback), suggesting that if the alpha constant (fundamental value) changes over time, this fact would be enough disprove a creator or God.As other reviewers noted, I was also bothered by the number of factual errors and sloppy & cartoonish descriptions in areas of science with which I'm familiar. These left me wondering and uneasy about the accuracy and legitimacy of commentary in those areas with which I'm not familiar.
